In the Cities of Coin and Spice is the sequel to In the Night Garden by Catherynne Valente. The books share the same structure, with stories nested inside of stories, up to /5.

And, of course, ridiculously beautiful language. As wonderful as “Night Garden” is, it ends a little abruptly, leaving plenty of room for “In the Cities of Coin and Spice to step in and fill the gap.

It may not be as extraordinary as its predecessor, but this sequel fills the gap left for it admirably/5(49). That book was a blessing for me-- execution and timing interacting perfectly.

Even if it cannot (for me) match the first, In the Cities of Coin and Spice would still be something that I would very much recommend. The Orphan's Tales deserve to be read as a whole.5/5(5). by Catherynne Valente. (their relationship grows nicely over the course of “Cities,” by the way, not to mention the development of the boy’s sister Dinarzad). However, I wish this book wasn’t just more of the same. For as much as I loved the first book, more of the same should be /5.

In the Cities of Coin and Spice is the sequel to In the Night Garden by Catherynne Valente. The books share the same structure, with stories nested inside of stories, up to seven levels including the framing story.

As for that framing story, it continues in this book and finally gets a satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed this one as much as the /5(33).

Of the two books found “In the Cities of Coin and Spice”, I personally liked The Book of the Storm more with its tales of the Mourned City, a creature made entirely out of teeth bones, food being distilled from rocks and jewels (opals, pearls, lapis lazuli, diamonds, topaz), a machine that manufactures coins out of the bones of little boys.
